Massachusetts
Massachusetts is one of the original Bridges to Excellence pilot markets and has been active since 2004. Massachusetts practices were early adopters of practice improvement performance programs and participated as beta testers of the eventual NCQA Physician Practice Connections program. Since that time, single physician practices to large integrated systems are participating in BTE and have pioneered practice transformation, significantly improving the care that is delivered. These improvements were motivated and achieved through the BTE collaborative effort and dedicated participation by all stakeholders. What is critical to note is that the improvements impact not just the employees of the participating employers, but all patients that visit the recognized physicians and practices. Some of the best examples of practice improvements come from the Massachusetts region. In addition, MassPRO, a leading performance improvement organization is also participating in BTE as a performance assessor through the DOQ-IT program, assisting practices by providing the tools to re-engineer. This is a clear example of how employers, providers, coalitions and quality improvement organizations can work together to improve care at the community level.
